🍽️✨ While vintage kitchenware like old Pyrex mixing bowls, Fiesta dishes, and other decorative cookware from the mid-20th century can add a charming touch to your home, they might also carry hidden risks.

Lead, a toxic heavy metal, was commonly used in the glazes and paints of older kitchen items before stricter regulations were introduced. When you use these items, or even just handle them, you can be exposed to lead, and if you use them regularly, you can end up unintentionally giving yourself, or your family, lead poisoning.

Lead exposure at high levels is extremely toxic and can be harmful to nearly every organ system in the body. But, we also know that there is no safe level of lead exposure - even small amounts can be harmful. For children, the nervous system is the most sensitive organ for lead exposure.

Lead exposure can lead to a variety of health issues, including:

❌ ADHD, delayed learning, and lower IQ (which will impact school performance)
❌ Developmental problems with their offspring
❌ Abnormal social behavior (increased aggression)
❌ Executive dysfunction
❌ Decreased fine motor skills
❌ Hypertension
❌ Kidney effects
❌ Reproductive problems

While many people think of sources of exposure from paint and contaminated water (these are still important sources to know about and address!), we shouldn’t overlook exposure lurking in vintage ware!

What to do if you love the vintage vibe:

👉 Vintage items are great for decor and accent pieces in the home, provided they are not handled often

👉 Avoig using vintage items for food contact (ie, dishes, utensils, drinkware, serving dishes, cooking, etc). Instead, always use newer or certified lead-free kitchenware for cooking and dining.

We’ve got toxic contaminants like mercury, pesticides, and microplastics on one hand, and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and lean protein on the other. ⚖️ Like so many topics related to health, nutrition, and toxic exposures, the answer is nuanced! THE GOOD: 🐟 Many types of seafood can be an excellent source of lean protein, and heart & brain-healthy nutrients. And for many communities, seafood is a mainstay of the diet and an important part of their culture. THE BAD: 🐟 Many types of seafood (mostly larger, ocean-dwelling species including tuna, king mackerel, Chilean sea bass, and swordfish) are contaminated with toxic chemicals like methylmercury, PBCs, and dioxins. In fact, seafood is our primary source of exposure to toxic PCBs. 🐟 Increasingly, microplastics have been measured in nearly all types of seafood. Although we don’t yet know what the implications of this are, we do know that microplastics can act as a sponge for other toxic chemicals in the water, including PCBs. 🐟 Imported seafood (depending on where it was caught/raised) can contain highly toxic chemicals, including banned pesticides. Only a tiny fraction of seafood is actually inspected upon entry into the US. 🐟 Many species have been overfished to the point of collapse. While you might look at that list and think 🤔”hmm, way more bad than good reasons” - it’s not that simple! For people who CHOOSE to eat seafood, the balance is in finding species that are both HIGH in nutrients, while being LOW in contamination and LOW in overfishing issues. But which ones fit the bill? ⁠ Generally speaking, Salmon, Mackerel, Anchovies, Sardines, and Herring tick those boxes. These are referred to by the acronym SMASH. These species are smaller, shorter-lived, and therefore safer to consume (larger and longer-lived species have more toxic burden). These species are typically more abundant - although salmon stocks are being depleted in many areas. ⁠ No one HAS to eat seafood, but if you do, consider prioritizing SMASH fish.$
