Low Toxin Sleep Sacks | Safe Materials & Cozy | Woolino, Castleware, honestbaby, touched by nature, keababies, burt's bees baby, owliva, disana, lanacare

As a consumer and a parent, you want the safest materials surrounding your little one when they are sleeping, but you may be wondering where to start. You have probably heard the buzzwords “certified organic”, non-toxic”, “toxin-free”, or “natural” but what does that mean when it comes to sleep sacks or wearable blankets? And, why does it matter when it comes to a baby’s health? We will discuss: what sleep sack to use, if sleep sacks are safe, why organic matters, what certifications to look for when purchasing a sleep sack for babies; and our favorite organic sleep sacks and where to buy them!

What Sleep Sack to Use

If you are looking for a sleep sack you may notice that there are many different styles to choose from. Below are the main options you may come across:

  • Sleep sack without arms: this is the most common version, it is a sleep sack that looks similar to a tank top on top. This allows you to easily layer based on the temperature where you live and in the room your baby will be sleeping in.
  • Sleep sack with legs: these are wearable blankets or sleepsacks that have cutouts for feet, this is a great option if your little one is standing and/or wants a little bit more free movement.
  • Sleep sack with arms or sleep sack with sleeves: these options are great for colder climates or the winter months in which you are hoping for more coverage. They are a wearable blanket that include long sleeves.
  • Sleep sack for newborns: these are typically lighter weight and come in smaller sizes for that newborn stage.
  • Sleep sack for babies: while these may be made of a similar weight to a newborn version, they tend to be a bit bigger for your growing baby.
  • Sleep sack for toddlers: these sleep sacks fit a typical toddler and typically come in many different weights for you to choose from.

What is a TOG Rating?

Many sleep sacks will state a TOG rating. TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade. This rating is a measure of thermal insulation used for baby sleep sacks and other bedding items. It indicates how warm a sleep sack will keep a baby and is based on the thickness and weight of the fabric used. The higher the TOG rating, the warmer the sleep sack will be.

This rating also helps parents determine the different clothing or layers of fabric a little one may need to wear to keep cozy while snoozing. My kiddos, for example, almost always have on an organic cotton sleep onesie with their baby sleeping bag.

The TOG rating can help parents choose a sleep sack appropriate for the temperature of the room, ensuring that their baby stays comfortable and safe throughout the night.

Why Organic Cotton or Organic Wool?

Conventional cotton is known as one of the dirtiest crops. We always want to choose organic cotton as traditional cotton is heavily sprayed with pesticides and herbicides, at a rate of about 25 pounds per acre. And cotton accounts for over 50% of all the pesticide use in our country – that’s more than any other crop! Cotton also requires heavy amounts of water to grow; it takes almost one gallon of water to produce just one ounce of cotton fabric.

Organic wool ensures that there is no use of conventional synthetic pesticides used internally, externally, and on pastures and no use of synthetic hormones or medicines used on the sheep, Organic sheep also cannot be dipped in parasiticides/insecticides. Additionally, there is no genetic engineering, all feed, pasture, and bedding is organic, and the sheep must have year-round access to the outdoors ensuring grazing is their primary source of nutrition.

When choosing organic wool, you are choosing a more natural material without the added chemicals and supporting sustainable farming practices.

Wool has been known to be a fabric that provides better temperature regulation for the whole family. In warmer climates, wool conducts more heat away from your skin and also provides antimicrobial benefits, naturally.

Certifications to Look For

Oeko Tex Standard 100 is a certification program that establishes and tests limits for harmful substances in textiles. It ensures that all materials used to make the product are free of over 300 specified harmful chemicals, such as lead or formaldehyde. However, it is important to note that Oeko Tex Standard 100-certified products may still contain flame retardants.

As a best practice, it is good to reach out to the company if you have concerns about a specific product. Additionally, if you are interested in checking if a company or item still holds this certification you can search for them on the portion of their website. The Oeko Tex Standard 100 certification covers both organic and non-organic textiles.

GOTS is a certification that has been issued to organic products since 1991. It ensures that the manufacturing process is monitored according to strict environmental criteria as well as social and economic standards. GOTS ensures that any fabric or fiber product bearing its label has been grown and processed organically with respect to both people and the planet starting from growing through manufacturing until disposal/recycling.

GOTS provides two levels to its certification: “made with organic” and “organic”. “Made with organic” textiles comprise at least 70% organic material while “organic” grade textiles are crafted from 95% or more organic fibers. Any of the certified items cannot contain hazardous chemicals or dyes. GOTS is unique in that it also evaluates the entire life of the product including the processing and manufacturing steps an item goes through. If you want to check if a product is GOTS-certified, you can search in the GOTS public database.

Are Sleep Sacks Safe?

Yes! The American Academy of Pediatrics ( safe sleep recommendations include “Keep loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers, and other soft items out of the sleep space.” By using a wearable blanket or sleep sack, there are no loose items in the bed with your newborn or baby. This will keep them warm and cozy while also safe!

Sleep Sack Versus Swaddle

A typical swaddle reduces the movement of your baby while they are sleeping. Swaddling is a way of wrapping a blanket around a baby so that they cannot wriggle out of it. They are said to reduce the startle reflex while keeping the baby warm.

A traditional swaddle is made out of fabric such as muslin, bamboo, or cotton, and is stretchy enough to wrap around the baby. Many 2-in-1 swaddles have hit the market that includes velcro, zippers, or snaps that make it easy to place on your baby. You may find these in a version that restricts the movement of arms or may allow for the arms to be free while the rest of the body is wrapped tightly in the fabric.

A wearable blanket or sleep sack is similar to a sleeping bag for your little one. They allow for free movement of arms and legs while providing the warmth and comfort your baby needs. Sleep sacks come in many versions (see above) to meet whatever temperature or style you may be looking for.

Sleep sacks are the perfect option for babies who are rolling over (when the AAP recommends that swaddles should no longer be used.) A huge perk of using a sleep sack from the start is that there will be no period of time in which you have to transition out of the swaddle that your baby may have come to rely on for sleeping.

Sleep sacks also have a bonus of providing easy access for diaper changes as most feature two-way zippers!
